![]() You can check for yourself on the NSSA website Trust but verify, especially when it comes to your family's safety. ![]() You don't even have to take our word for it. All Tornado Alley Armor Safe Rooms have undergone the rigorous testing required to gain membership in the prestigious NSSA. With the safe room industry being unregulated this is a VERY important thing to check for. They check for FEMA compliance and if you don't pass every aspect then you are allowed to join. The important part of this is that the 2nd one was an independent peer review. In order for Tornado Alley Armor Safe Rooms to qualify to join the NSSA we had to pass two inspections of our design. Wondering how to tell on your own if a safe room company is really what they say they are? The easy way to tell is to look for a membership in the National Storm Shelter Association. Safe rooms are sometimes called storm shelters or tornado shelters, but to truly be qualified as a "Safe Room" under FEMA P-320 guidelines they have to meet strict guidelines. Researching safe rooms? Tornado Alley Armor is your one stop shop for everything to do with safe rooms! Additionally, the customer is ultimately paying for the cost of the steel, so a safe room with 1/4" thick walls is going to weigh nearly twice as much as one of ours of the same size, so you're paying for at least 1,000 lbs or more of unnecessary steel with the other guys. A 2x4 may shatter, but something harder, like a fence post, could potentially puncture or rip cold plate steel whereas our tempered steel will simply deflect slightly while the impact energy dissipates into the structure instead of staying concentrated at the point of impact. The latter makes for good video 'wow' effect, but it demonstrates the lack of malleability & resiliency of welded steel plate steel. Only FOUR impacts were required.we asked for the rest to make a point. If you've watched our impact testing video you'll see how the NINE 15 lb 2x4's just bounce off our walls vs exploding on impact as they do with the thicker walls. It's performance vs A36 is analogous to using lightweight, resilient Kevlar vs 1" thick, heavy lead plates for body armor. It performs entirely different than the commonly-used A36 COLD ROLLED plate steel, which has to be much thicker since it hasn't been heat treated. Unlike nearly all other manufacturers, we use HOT ROLLED ASTM 1011-CS Type B 10-gauge (0.135), a tempered steel. Regarding our steel, you'll likely be comparing apples to oranges. How thick is the steel in your Tornado Alley Armor safe rooms?
